Ankle fractures are a common type of injury, often occurring through mechanisms of trauma such as falls, sports injuries, or motor vehicle accidents. Among these, open fractures of the ankle are particularly concerning due to their associated soft tissue damage, increased risk of infection, and a more complicated healing process. An open fracture is defined as a fracture in which there is a break in the skin, exposing the bone and surrounding tissues. This type of fracture is indicative of high-energy trauma and poses significant challenges for orthopedic management. The fibula, a slender bone located on the lateral side of the lower leg, plays a vital role in stabilizing the ankle joint. Open fractures involving the fibula can complicate the injury further due to the critical anatomical relationships in the surrounding area, particularly with respect to the ankle joint, ligaments, tendons, and blood vessels.
